RCD Safety Plug JCB PRCDK-JC

The Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents (RoSPA) recommends the use of an RCD to reduce the risk of fatal shock. For electrical safety it is recommended to always fit an RCD when you use an electric mower or power tools. You can have an RCD fitted to protect a particular circuit as part of the socket outlet between the socket outlet and the equipment being used. For greater safety when using electrical equipment in the garden use a residual current devices (RCDs). Care in use is still necessary.

A residual current device (RCD) can provide additional protection against direct contact. RCDs compare the sizes of the currents flowing in the live and neutral conductors of a circuit. In a healthy circuit, the currents will be equal. But if some of the current leaks to earth, for example through a person’s body, the device will sense the imbalance and, if it reaches a predetermined threshold size, will rapidly disconnect the circuit. RCDs have a rated tripping current of 30 mA or less, and they are designed to operate within 40ms (0.04 seconds). Anyone making direct contact with an RCD-protected circuit will still receive a painful electric shock, but it is unlikely to be lethal. Anyone working with mains powered equipment outdoors should always use an RCD. This is particularly true for lawn mowers and hedge trimmers. People often cut through the supply cable accidentally, exposing themselves and others to the risk of electric shock. A significant proportion of electrocutions occur in the garden. This is because the effects of electric shock are generally more severe outdoors, where people are in contact with the ground. Damp ground provides a relatively low resistance path for shock currents toflow through the body. Ideally, RCD protection should be built into the consumer unit (fuse box) to ensure it is always present. Alternatively, plug-in RCDs are available which can literally be life-savers.

Power tool plugs must match the outlet. Never modify the plug in any way. Do not expose power tools to rain or wet conditions. Do not abuse the cord. Never use the cord for carrying, pulling or unplugging the power tool. Keep cord away from heat, oil, sharp edges or moving parts. When operating a power tool outdoors, use an extension lead suitable for outdoor use.

This JCB RCD PLUG will continuously monitor the power supply to an electrical appliance and cut off the supply within 40 milliseconds if an earth current fault is detected. This is fast enough to prevent a fatal electrical shock. Electrical appliances can become dangerous if the wiring becomes loose, if they or their power cords become damaged or if they get wet. Electrocution is also possible if fingers, wet hair or other conductive bodies enter the appliance.
