Air compressors are potentially dangerous equipment, which if not used correctly can cause serious injury to the user. The user bears sole responsibility for any damage or injury that may result from the use of the compressor for any purpose other than it was intended. Air compressors should not be operated by persons under 16 years of age, or persons whose stature and strength will prevent the safe operation of the compressor.

Take care when selecting tools for use with the compressor. Air tool manufacturers normally express the volume of air required to operate a tool in cubic feet per minute (cfm). This refers to free air delivered by the compressor (‘air out’) which varies according to the pressure setting. Do not confuse this with the compressor displacement which is the air taken in by the compressor (‘air in’). ‘Air out’ is always less than ‘air in’ due to losses within the compressor. Be sure to take into account the CFM (Cubic Feet per Minute) requirements of your air tool, which will need to be lower than the CFM of your compressor. High CFM ratings mean a compressor can provide more air, making higher CFM units more practical for larger applications.

WHEN WORK IS COMPLETE.
At the end of each working day, drain any moisture from the main tank. Place a container under the drain plug and then carefully unscrew it. DO NOT allow moisture to accumulate in the tank as this will corrode the inside of the tank and affect the pressure rating of the tank.

General Maintenance

Clean the machine by using compressed air. Pay particular attention to both the controls and the motors. Remove any residual oil. Clean all finned parts of the compressor, to ensure the efficiency of the cooling system and so increase the working life of the compressor.

ELECTRICAL SAFETY

Power tool plugs must match the outlet. Never modify the plug in any way. Do not expose power tools to rain or wet conditions. Do not abuse the cord. Never use the cord for carrying, pulling or unplugging the power tool. Keep cord away from heat, oil, sharp edges or moving parts. When operating a power tool outdoors, use an extension lead suitable for outdoor use.

The Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents (RoSPA) recommends the use of an RCD to reduce the risk of fatal shock. For electrical safety it is recommended to always fit an RCD when you use power tools. You can have an RCD fitted to protect a particular circuit as part of the socket outlet between the socket outlet and the equipment being used. For greater safety when using electrical equipment use a residual current device (RCD). Care in use is still necessary.
